The main reason we choose to color our hair is to make us feel better about the way we look. Sometimes it’s just a couple of highlights around the face to brighten our look and for others with premature grey it takes full blown all over color. I had a friend when I was younger who had the most beautiful head of thick grey hair in her 30’s, and she rocked it. As with anything regarding our appearance we are all different.

This is especially true today where anything and everything goes, from soft blondes to lush brunettes, and yes blue, green and even grey, are all very popular today. It does not matter who you are or what you want; if color is applied properly, the world is your oyster.

In my blog posts, I am always going to go back to body types, face shapes and lifestyles. The number one thing that tells you everything you can do color wise is eye color. If you look closely at your eyes in the mirror you see many different colors. Those colors will tell you how light/dark you can and how warm or how cool you can wear your hair. It fascinates me.

When I teach I always tell the students when they first meet someone to visually take them in from head to toe. Are they short, tall, and what about face shape. Are they wearing Armani or Walmart?  I work to assess all of this in the first few seconds. Then it’s all about the consultation because, if there is a breakdown, it all falls apart. I like to take that few extra minutes and really make sure we are on the same page. This is the most important part of the appointment; my client tells or shows me what they are looking for and then it is up to me the stylist to let them know if what they want is achievable and sensible.  In my opinion, if color is placed in the right places with the right tones my clients will walk away looking good and feeling good.

Recently, one of my clients asked me when she would no longer be able to color her hair? The best thing I can say to that is whenever you are comfortable not coloring it. Not all of us are going to get that gorgeous grey hair that my friend had years ago. So, whether you are young, old, man or woman, color applied correctly can be fun and easy way to give yourself a lift.
